Too few young people are aware of the Dangers of sunbeds: survey

of many of the United States tanning salons warn teenagers and young women about skin cancer risks posed by tanning beds, according to a new survey.

The American Academy of survey online Dermatology included more than 3,800 white females 14 to 22 years from across the country who were questioned on their knowledge of tanning, attitudes and behaviours.

The survey revealed that 43% of indoor tanners said that they did had never been warned about the dangers of sunbeds tanning salon employees, and 30% reported that they had not noticed any warning labels on tanning beds.

And the survey revealed some potentially fatal misunderstandings on tanning beds.

(Aged 14 to 17 years) younger tanning bed users were two times more likely than older users (18 to 22 years old) of wrong to believe that tanning beds are safer than the Sun (39% versus 15%) and more than three times as likely to mistakenly believe that the beds of Tan does not skin cancer cause (26% vs. 8%), according to the results of.

"Tanning presents a significant risk to health, especially for [White] because of their skin. Studies have shown that UV [] ultraviolet tanning beds increases risk of melanoma by 75 percent, "Dr. Ronald l. Moy, President of the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA), stated in a release academy."

"Contributing to this problem is the fact that currently sunbed facilities are not required to notify oral patrons of health risks known UV radiation and, in some cases, they can be misleading the public by promoting false artificial UV light as safer than the light of the Sun".He added.

AVG has noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently classifies tanning beds as a class I medical device. This means that they are subjected to a level similar to bandages, tongue depressors, crutches, minimum regulation and monitoring.

"This is why it is important that the FDA amend classification of tanning equipment to take account of the important health risks that they pose, often without knowing it, tanning salon users," said Moy.

The AADA supports tanning bed Cancer Control Act, which calls for the FDA to review its classification of sunbeds and introduce the increased consumption of warning label rules for devices.
