But how long that a student takes to achieve degree can vary. Although the chronology of the typical College is drawn along a course of four years, more than half of the students, take on average, more time to obtain their diploma, according to U.S. News data.

Each year, U.S. News surveys more than 1,700 colleges and universities to glean a multitude of statistics of the student, including the size of a class of entry and the total number of recruits who graduated four years later. In 2010, 1266 schools submitted data rate of delivery of diplomas to students who enrolled college in the fall of 2003, obtained graduate by August 2007 - the most recent available data by a standard defined by the Government to follow students beyond six years.

Through schools, only 40 per cent of the students, on average, started college in 2003, graduated from the same institution and four years later. However, in 10 colleges with the highest rates of graduation of four years, an average of about 90 per cent of students completed their degree in four years. (For these statistics, students who transfer into or out of any school are not included in the data rate of delivery of diplomas and students completing certain majors - like architecture - which take more time to complete may slightly lower the graduation of four-year statistics).

College for many students and families capable of planning is to create a budget and future expectations based on a degree of four years, but the academic calendar of students is easily extended. A major change, a semester abroad or difficulty if a seat in a mandatory course may each push a graduation date. To combat this, many schools offer a variety of support systems to help students graduate on time, including mandatory checkins with a Counsellor and a full course of planning.

At Pomona College, for example, students are encouraged to fill out checklists made by the school each year to ensure that they remain on track. It seems to work: in 2007, almost 89 per cent of fourth-year graduate students. Randolph Macon College, where only about 56 per cent of students graduated at the end of four years in 2007, announced recently a new initiative of degree completion will provide tuition free for any course a student must always complete after four years.
