Number of eggs retrieved allows to predict the success of IVF

extraction of eggs about 15 of the ovaries of women in a single fertilization in vitro (IVF) cycle offers the best chance to reach a live birth while avoiding the complications of fertility drugs, a new study.

Researchers analyzed more than 400 000 cycles of IVF in the United Kingdom between 1991 and 2008 and found a strong association between the rate of live births and the number of eggs retrieved in a cycle.

The rate of live births rose with a growing number of eggs up to about 15, stabilized between 15 and 20 eggs and constantly decreased beyond 20 eggs.

The study appears online in the journal Human Reproduction.

"Our data show that about 15 eggs can be the best number aim to a cycle of IVF to maximize the chances of a born alive while minimizing the risk of syndrome of ovarian hyperstimulation (OMC), which is associated with a high number of ?ufshabituellement more than 20"., "Dr. Arri Coomarasamy, a clinical drive and consultant in reproductive medicine and surgery at the University of Birmingham, said in a press release of the newspaper."

"Gentle stimulation protocols aim to recover less than six to eight eggs;" standard stimulation should be 10-15 eggs, and we believe that this is what is associated with the best results of IVF, said Coomarasamy. "When the number of eggs more than 20, the risk of OHSS becomes high."

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome may occur when women are given hormone drugs to stimulate the production of egg collection for IVF cycles. Abdominal pain, swelling, nausea and vomiting often appear in mild or moderate OHSS. In rare and serious cases, OHSS can be a life-threatening medical emergency.
