Prostate Cancer studies find advantage in daily acetaminophen and walks Brisk

POP a Tylenol and take a brisk walk for protection against prostate cancer? This is what the results of two new studies published this week suggested.


In the first study, published Monday in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, biomarkers and prevention, scientists have found that men who took a daily dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) for five years had a 38% lower risk of developing cancer of the prostatecompared with men. In addition, daily acetaminophen has been associated with an of 51% reduced risk of developing an aggressive form of the disease. The men who took acetaminophen for less than five years saw no protective benefit.


Previous research has shown that taking aspirin or other drugs anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) every day can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The authors believe that the same may be true of acetaminophen; While not an NSAID, it has anti-inflammatory properties.


For the study, researchers looked at data 78,485 men who participated in the longitudinal Cancer Prevention study II Nutrition cohort, answering questions on the use of food and pharmaceutical plan every two years from 1992. During the period of follow-up, there were 8,092 cases of prostate cancer - much less in the group who took acetaminophen daily for five years.


The second study, published Tuesday online research on Cancer, involved 1,455 men who had already been achieved in prostate cancer stage. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Harvard School of Public Health, then the men from 2004 to 2009 and found that those who engaged in regular brisk walking after diagnosis were significantly less likely to see their progression of the disease.


Men who walked fast - at a rate of approximately 3 miles per hour or faster - at least three hours per week were 57% less likely to experience of the progression of the disease (including high levels of PSA)(, secondary treatment of bone metastases and prostate cancer-related deaths), compared with men who walked less and more slowly.


"The important point is the intensity of activity," Erin Richman, a postdoctoral fellow at UCSF, said in a statement. "The March must be rapid for men to experience an advantage."


Researchers have said that the effect of speed walking remains independent of age, diagnosis, type of treatment and characteristics of the disease. Average age of patients at diagnosis was 65. The findings are consistent with previous research, which suggests that physical activity can help reduce the risk of deaths from the disease in some cases of prostate cancer.

Richman and his colleagues have noted that brisk walking may reduce resistance to insulin, which reduces bioavailable,-1 (IGF1) insulin-like growth factor and increases adiponectin levels, which are all associated with the decrease in the risk of prostate cancer advanced or fatal in vitro and in vivo.

Another potential source of reduction is inflammation reduced due to low circulation of Interleukin-6, high levels of which "predicts risk of 73% increased to die of cancer of the prostate in men of normal weight."wrote the researchers.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. According to the National Cancer Institute, men about 32,050 die of cancer of the prostate in 2010 and 217,000 new cases were diagnosed. More than 2.2 million of men to the United States with prostate cancer.

Chronic use of acetaminophen related blood cancers: study

NEW YORK  - chronic users of acetaminophen painkiller risk slightly increased for cancers of the blood, according to a US study.


But the risk remains low and it is still uncertain, what role plays the drugs, the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, added.


Previous work has shown that the consumption of aspirin could reduce the likelihood of dying from colon cancer but increase the risk of bleeding ulcers, although the image has been less clearly blood or blood, cancer.

Over six years on average, 577 people, or less than 1%, has developed a hematologic cancer.


More than 9% of those who, however, used large amounts of acetaminophen, compared to only 5 per cent of those who did not get sick.


After accounting for things like age, arthritis and family history of certain cancers of the blood, chronic users acetaminophen had almost twice the risk of developing disease.


No other pain relievers, including aspirin and ibuprofen, were tired at the risk of cancers of the blood.


White says that it is still too early to make recommendations based on the study, adding that they do pain relievers are free of side effects.


"Use long term of prescription drugs could have negative effects." "You have to weigh the benefits against the risk of all drugs", she added.

"Prior to this study, there was very little evidence that aspirin reduces your risk of hematologic cancers," said Emily White of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in Seattle, who worked on the new research.


On the other hand, there were some suggestions that acetaminophen may increase the risk of cancers, but those which were based on individual cases of cancer of the blood.


Studies of individual patients are not considered as as strong as the new, which followed a significant population of people in good health over time.


"We have the first prospective study," White told Reuters Health.


Yet, she warned, there is no evidence that acetaminophen causes cancer, and new results must be confirmed prior to use in any decision about the treatment.


Previous work linked acetaminophen to asthma and eczema as well, but scientists still disagree on the question of whether the drug is the real culprit or just a mere spectator.


The new study suffers same limitations, in that people who use many analgesics may be dealing with medical problems, which places cancer on the road.


Scientists tracked nearly 65 000 older men and women in the State of Washington. Initially, they asked participants on their use of pain relievers during the last ten years and ensured that nobody had cancer (except skin cancer).


Approximately six years on average, 577 people, or less than one percent, have developed a cancer involving blood cells. Lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome MDS of the examples of these cancers.


More than nine percent of people who have developed one of these cancers used lots of acetaminophen, compared to only five per cent of those who did not get sick.

The devices should not be any unnecessary markings.Companies should ensure that distribution devices are used only with the products.The marks of measure on the distribution of devices must be clearly visible when the liquid product is added to the device.

"Accidental overdose of drugs among young children is a problem more in more common but preventable public health," Dr Karen Weiss, program director for the Centre for drug evaluation and research safe use Initiative, said in a press release from the FDA.


The FDA also outlined 10 tips that should be followed by parents and caregivers when giving medicine to an infant or child:

Read and follow the label of the drug facts about OTC medicines.Know the active ingredient of the medicine.Use the dosing tool that comes with the medicine.Know the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon.Know the weight of your child.Give the remedy, in the right amount.Check medicine three times.Ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse who may or may not be used at the same time of drugs.Always use the child-resistant caps on drugs.Store all medicines in a safe place.
