LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - one in four caregivers for the sick or elderly parents and friends, said in a survey published on Tuesday that they suffer from depression, a figure much higher than for the population of the United States in General.
By comparison, it is estimated that 9% of all Americans suffer from depression, according to a study published year last by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Californian company Caring.com, a website for caregivers who commissioned the survey of 400 respondents, said the high level of depression reported by those attending to a loved one is one like many with their own health problems.
The survey also found that one third of family caregivers spend more than 30 hours per week in this role, and 77% are concerned about the impact of their rights on their economies.
Most caregivers were attending a disabled parent, while the rest were spouse, a parent or a friend.
